In the Beginning: family guide
For ages 6–10. Explore Genesis 1:1–2:3 and connect it with John 1:1–5, 14. Read, listen, wonder, and try an activity. You can spread this adventure over several days.
The big truths
- God is the Creator. His word is powerful and trustworthy.
- Creation is good. People—male and female—are made in God's image.
- Human responsibility includes caring for God's world and treating people with dignity.
- God blessed and sanctified the seventh day. Our pronomian practice receives Sabbath as a continuing gift, explored more fully in the Sabbath adventure.
- John identifies the Word as with God and as God, through whom all things were made. The Word became flesh: Jesus, the Father's Son.
- God's love and grace are gifts; completing activities does not earn salvation.
Read the actual passages
Genesis 1:1–5; 1:6–8; 1:9–13; 1:14–19; 1:20–23; 1:24–31; 2:1–3; John 1:1–5; John 1:14. The reader presents Berean Standard Bible text, with chapter links for notes. The lesson explanations are original summaries.
Jesus as Creator and the dwelling connection
Read John 1:1–5 with Colossians 1:16–17 and Hebrews 1:1–3. God created through His Son; all things are through Him and for Him, and He upholds creation. The Father and Son are united in creation, and the Son existed before His human birth.
Then follow Exodus 25:8–9; 40:34–35; Leviticus 23:39–43; John 1:14; John 7:2, 14, 37–39; and Revelation 21:3–4. Distinguish the sanctuary tent from the family booths at the feast. The lesson draws a thematic connection among God’s presence, glory, wilderness provision, the incarnation, and the future dwelling promise.
John 1:14’s BSB footnote offers “and tabernacled among us.” Its Greek verb, skēnoō, has tent-dwelling language. The BSB text stays intact in the reader; the note and our explanation appear alongside it. In our pronomian practice, we continue celebrating the feast with remembrance, joy in Christ, thanksgiving for the Spirit, and hope.

Teach with care
The illustrated scenes and activities help children remember the text. They are artistic representations, not photographs or a scientific simulation. Children explore what God made; their clicks do not represent creating life. Scripture's claims and the lesson's explanations remain labeled.
Our emphasis is on the Creator, His good world, human dignity, Jesus, and the seventh day. Welcome children's questions. If your family discusses further questions about creation, read the passage closely and distinguish its wording from your conclusions.
Wonder together
- What do you notice God doing repeatedly in the story?
- How does being made in God's image change the way we treat people?
- What does John tell us about Jesus and creation?
- What can we care for this week? How can we prepare for Sabbath together?
A family activity
Take a walk with a grown-up. Notice light, sky, plants, animals, and people. Thank God for each. Care for a plant or shared space, and show kindness to someone. Choose a quiet, restful time to pray together.
Pray: Father, thank You for Your good creation and for Your Son. Help us trust Your word, care for Your world, and treat every person with love. Amen.
